2021 Philip Wright Award Winner

Ashley Hamby, a K-5 Special Education Interrelated teacher at Fair Street International Academy, was selected as a recipient of the 2021 Philip Wright Award. Each year, school districts in the Northeast Georgia Pioneer RESA region honor an individual who has a strong commitment to improving educational outcomes for students with disabilities.  The Philip Wright Award recognizes outstanding individuals within our local communities for their service, commitment, and advocacy of children with special needs.  The award honors the legacy of Mr. Philip Wright, a strong advocate committed to improving educational programs and services provided to students with disabilities in school systems within the Pioneer RESA region.

“Ashley successfully builds positive relationships with colleagues and families,” said Beth Skarda, GCSS Director of Special Education. “She is a rising star in the Special Education community.”

An incredibly dedicated, kind, and caring person, Hamby started her career as a regular classroom teacher.  Three years ago, she transitioned into Special Education and fell in love with teaching students with disabilities.  Hamby understands the unique challenges her students face and designs instruction to help them reach their full potential.  “I am truly honored and humbled receiving the Philip Wright Award for supporting my students, which is doing what I absolutely love,” expressed Hamby.  “I will continue to strive to do all I can to meet my SPED students where they are and provide multiple forms of support to encourage their progress. From my experience, I have been able to see how they really need someone in their corner cheering them on and celebrating their small successes on their journey; with this, they can do amazing things.”
