GAINESVILLE CITY SCHOOLS DRESS CODE

AND UNIFORM ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

2003 – 2004


The Gainesville City School System’s Board of Education recognizes that the appearance of students, both individually and collectively, is a significant factor to the effective and successful operation of the system’s educational programs.  A student’s personal appearance should promote a healthy and safe environment and should not cause any interference with the educational process.  A student’s dress should be reflective of the diverse and dynamic cultures of the community.   Any clothing deemed inappropriate or disruptive by the administration will not be allowed.  Appropriate attire must be worn at all times.

The Gainesville City School System’s Board of Education includes a mandatory dress code and voluntary uniform compliance. 

The Gainesville City School System’s Board of Education dress code and voluntary uniform compliance guidelines are as follows:

ELEMENTARY
Dress Code
Students can wear

  • Collared shirts tucked in (Tank tops, see-through tops, halters, midriffs, sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, loose-fitting clothes that expose underwear or body parts, tight-fitting or any other attire that is deemed inappropriate or immodest may not be worn.)

  • Pants at waist level

  • Shoes and socks (no flip-flops)

  • Dresses to knees with sleeves

  • Shorts and skorts to knees

  • Capris (are acceptable)

  • Overcoat and headgear (must be removed upon entering the building)

  • Spirit day at principal’s discretion

  • NO JEANS OR T-SHIRTS ALLOWED

Uniform
Students can wear

  • Red, black or white collared shirts (tucked in)

  • Khaki or black pants, dresses, shorts, capris and skorts

  • Red, black and white plaid jumper or skort

  • NO JEANS OR T-SHIRTS ALLOWED

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Dress Code
Students can wear

  • Collared shirts of any colors

  • Pants, dresses, capris and skorts of any color

  • Pants must be worn at waist level

  • No jeans except for designated spirit Fridays

  • Dresses to the knees with sleeves

  • Shorts and skorts to the knee (must be worn at waist level)

  • Shoes and socks (no flip-flops, slippers, shower shoes)

  • Hair in its natural appearance (no distracting hair colors or hair cuts)

Students can not wear

  • Tank tops, see-through tops, halters, midriffs, sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, loose-fitting clothes that expose underwear or body parts, tight-fitting or any other attire that is deemed inappropriate or immodest

  • Clothing displaying any obscene, sexually or racially inflammatory, or otherwise disrespectful and questionable messages or symbols

  • Overcoat, head gear (Bandannas, head bands, except those worn to retain hair, visible hats/head covering must be removed upon entering the building)

  • Head covering (worn because of religious beliefs must obtain administrative approval)

  • Sunglasses inside the building

  • NO T-SHIRTS ALLOWED

Uniform

  • Red, black or white collared shirts (tucked in)

  • Khaki or black pants, dresses, shorts and skorts

  • Red, black and white plaid jumper or skort

  • NO T-SHIRTS ALLOWED

HIGH SCHOOL

Gainesville High School is granted a waiver for wearing school uniforms.  The school reserves the right to add and delete to the present dress code as deemed necessary to maintain appropriate and modest dress.

Students can not wear

  • Shirts without sleeves (no sleeveless shirts or tank tops or dresses may be worn to school during normal school hours)

  • Tank tops, see through tops, halters, midriffs, spaghetti straps, loose-fitting clothes that expose underwear, tight-fitting or embarrassingly-revealing clothes

  • Shorts (The only exception will be for students who “dress out” for physical education classes or during designated days by administration.)

  • Pants/jeans below waist level

  • Dresses and skirts above the knee

  • Clothing displaying any obscene, sexually or racially inflammatory, or otherwise disrespectful and questionable messages or symbols

  • Clothing promoting any illegal activity

  • Clothing displaying or advertising alcohol and tobacco

  • Flip-flops, slippers/bedroom and shower shoes

  • Visible hats and head coverings on any part of the campus

  • Head coverings (worn for religious beliefs must have administrative approval)

  • Headbands (except those worn to retain hair)

  • Bandannas

NOTE: Students who violate the dress code at Gainesville High School will go to ISS and wait until an administrator makes parent contact.

Uniform garments may be purchased at the store of your choice provided they adhere to the standards above.   Uniforms may be purchased from the following local vendors: Dress Code, J. C. Penney, Target, or ordered from French Toast Official School Wear.  Addition vendor information may be obtained from school offices.
